A few photos from the workshop . . . .
This page will be devoted to recent projects and I'll be creating some sub-pages for other larger programmes of work. I hope you find the photos interesting.
James is 'sorting out' the pump for martyns' Aveling - complete new internals and refurbished everywhere else!
David has been busy with our 20hp Marshall semi-portable - the tubes are fitted and we have started on sorting the fittings out.
The RSJ portable is progressing well. All tubed now and standing up. The smokebox is the next job.
There are some new photos of the big Marshall 20hp semi-portable on it's individual page along with some progress photos of the RSJ portable on the ransomes boiler work page. Steve has kept going with the work on his 12hp Britannia engine. here are a couple of shots of it now.
All engine is stripped now. The studs have now been removed for replacement.
The tubeplate is out and the boiler cleaned inside. The longditudinal stays have been removed from their brackets. A new tubeplate has been purchased and will be fitted soon. Steve has also made a sturdy A-frame for 'Pedro the portable'!
David has made significant progress on Martyns' A & P 7195, Bernado. All the stays are now finished. The crown stays are all in with washers and nuts now. A couple of other photos are on the 'Aveling' page.
Steve is progressing his 12hp Marshall Britannia. One reason for a bigger boiler is that you can get inside easily !
We have also been progressing the Ransomes portable with the box made now. Photos on the Ransomes page.
Adam Meredith is also here doing some work. A bit of gold leaf !
Adams' own web pages can be found on the links page.
Here is Sam . . resting after putting in a few rivets on the Ransomes portable boiler this week. I've added a couple of photos to the progress on this engine and Bernado, the Aveling on their own pages.
Here is 'Bernado', A & P 7195. Her box is in - I'll be adding some more photos on the Aveling boiler works page soon.
She has had new plate to both sides of her outer wrapper and is awaiting her box to go in.
David and Sam have also been making new lagging sheets.
Work on the Ransomes portable continues - more photos on the Ransomes boilerworks page.
The boiler is in a very bad way. It will require a new barrell, firebox and tubeplate and also plates let into the outer wrapper along the backhead. I'll add more photos as work progresses. She is missing the pump - if you can help the owner would be very grateful.
David has been doing a few little jobs to Murphy and then, obviously had to steam her . . .
Steve Rodenhurst is working on his 12hp Marshall Britannia engine. He has removed all 58 tubes now. I have put some photos of the boiler construction on the Marshall boilerworks page.
All sorts of bits and pieces being tidied up at the moment but we are all busy with our nusery too. Here are a couple of photos of the Burrell boilerwork which is nearing completion.
Lots to report from the workshop - some of our own project are progressing but here is a snap shot of Chris and Paul Wood awaiting for 'Miss Mann' to raise steam for her test prior to the RRA open day.
The Ransomes portable outer wrapper is now ready for the barrell fitting having had a piece 'let in' to the throatplate. Here it is finished and another photo of the preparation on the Ransomes boilerworks page.
David has started some boiler work on a small Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies portable steam engine. It is good to see portables getting restored and more of them at the rallies.
Dave was painting his portable while the weather was good . . .
Not too much to report from the workshop so some photos instead of our nursery business ! to cheers us up after the snow. Spring primroses.
David has also done a few 'shinny' jobs . .
Recently we have been working on the Burrell again and also Martyn Blackburns Aveling. He is trying to decide on a name for her so I won't have to keep referring to her as 7195. Here is her new box.
David has been making and fitting Burrell stays. This shows the 'side' stays finished on the inside of the box. David is using a stay tap from the outside to cut the threads in the innner firebox.
Over the holiday period we have been busy. I've added some photos of the Burrell box which is now in on the 'Burrell boiler works' page.
Here is a photo of the Aveling belonging to James West now finished and awaiting its' tubes. A couple more photos on the 'Aveling boiler works' page.
Aveling tubeplates seem to be the task at the moment - here the one for 7195 in the lathe.
David and Sam spent some time preparing the Burrell box prior to rivetting.
A few things to report from the 'workshop'. The arrival of Aveling & Porter 7195. For those regular visitors to the web page, this is the Aveling that we brought back from Chile last year and is now owned by Martyn Blackburn. He has done a great job of stripping her down - quite a task after all the years she has spent in the playground.
With a bit of sunshine, David was able to get some paint on 'Murphys' lagging sheets after the hydraulic test today. It was a good match of paint too!
There are some items he needs - in particular a pair of R10 chain sweeps and the square 'block' that goes in the headstock to hold the front fork - if anyone can help please e-mail me for his contact details.
I am putting some more photos on the Aveling boilerwork page so you can follow the progress.
Also in the workshop is the Burrell tractor firebox. Here is David drilling the tubeholes.
At the weekend Sam was drilling the holes for the foundation ring on the Burrell box. Here it is nearly ready to go in now.
The 6hp Marshall portable has now had the wooden battens put on ready for the lagging sheets. A bit more to finish off. A cold job last weekend !
Another job was putting the lagging sheets back on 'Murphy', our tandem Aveling after the hydraulic test. They are now undercoated ready for some better weather for the top coats.
Recently David has been working on the Aveling belonging to James West. This is the current status. There are more pictures on the 'Aveling boiler works' page.
The Marshall portable has now had its' hydraylic test and today was the 're-assemble' day. However the sun was shinning, for a change, so everyone got carried away and we put a fire in her. Here are the first photos.
Here, in steam next to the Marshall 8hp Britannia.
We have spent some time working on the 8hp Brittania that we currently have for sale. She was in such good condition that we wanted to warm her up! David is up there taking a look and adjusting the gland. She is a very early Brittania being 1903 and is fitted with slide bars rather than a trunk guide. I think she is the only one in the UK with this - please let me know if you have seen another.

We have a marshall portable engine (see the Marshall boiler works page) that has been retubed and is ready shortly for a hydraulic test. We have just added a new smokebox. You can see it here in the photo now all rivetted up.
We have also been stripping a Garrett 4CD. This needs attention to the motion. In particular the trunk guides and cross heads. Here is a photo showing the trunk guide and cross head assembly removed.
Trunk guide set up in the lathe.
The cross head.
The new assembly prior to refitting complete with new valve rod guide too. James Cummins did the machinning in our home workshop.
Sam Goddard was in charge of the gentle running in process.
