Buffalo - Springfild is the most widely recognisd name of all American road rollers. It comes from the amalgamation of two companies in 1916; Kelly - Springfield from Ohio and Buffalo - Pitts from Buffalo, New York. Both had previously manufactured road rollers and were regarded as inovative companies.
In 1913 the US federal goverment announcd that they were to construct over 50,000 miles of highways and the newly merged company hoped to profit from this.
This works photo from the Drake Collection shows the SM36 'Extolled' 10 ton roller. This type with the third speed was only introduced in January 1925.
